Message from the Director of Netball and Club Sport
Garry Nucifora, Executive Director of Sport

Since commencing the newly-created role of Director of Netball and Club Sport, I must say I have been delighted to work with the fine young students we have leading our sporting clubs on campus. With nearly twenty sports clubs operating on campus, they combine to provide more than 50 training and game sessions per week, creating nearly 1000 sweaty, smiling faces each week (and the occasional glimpse of frustration!).

2020 has seen the usual Bond turnover of office bearers as the hectic pace of the Bond academic calendar sees our students commence and then graduate in what seems like the blink of an eye. Our new executive teams are doing a terrific job of promoting their respective sports and providing opportunities across the full range of students

talents, from on-campus social competitions through to participating in high-level community competitions. In this environment, our coaches are incredibly important as they often retain the organisational memory of many of our programs and we have been pleased to welcome a number of new coaches this semester. These coaches are recruited not only for their ability to coach the sport in question, but also for their ability to work constructively with our student population and the broad section of abilities which occur within our clubs.

With our University Nationals taking place in Perth in Semester 3 this year, planning is well underway towards taking a strong contingent of athletes west to retain our Doug Ellis Trophy for the National Per Capita champions (which we have now held for the last three years). Bond University has always punched above its weight and we are looking forward to continuing to work our way towards the top of the University Nationals tree, even against some universities who have student populations 18 times larger than ours!

In addition to the University Nationals in Perth (which this year are simultaneously catering for Division 1 and Division 2 athletes), we are also putting teams together for the stand-alone competitions such as golf, 3x3 basketball, distance running, athletics, swimming, triathlon, League of Legends and surfing. These teams will all play an important part in the defence of our Doug Ellis Trophy as they heads to different parts of the country to represent Bond.

Club Sport at Bond University is a vibrant space and to walk around campus on a Monday evening and see the range of sports being played, and the enthusiasm and enjoyment with which they are being played, is an absolute joy and testament to the hard work of our coaches and executives, as well as a glimpse into the special nature of life as a student at Bond.

If you would like to get involved in sport at Bond, make sure you follow us on Facebook or Instagram to see what’s happening and stay up-to-date as clubs regularly hold one-off campus tournaments along with their weekly training sessions. As with all things at Bond, the message from Club Sport is simple – get involved!
