Message from the Director of AFL
Dave Ashkar, Director of AFL

I’m so proud of everyone involved in our AFL program this year.

All four teams made finals this season with our senior men’s team and women’s development team taking out their respective Grand Finals, our senior women’s team were runners up against a red-hot Coorparoo and our reserve men’s team played in two finals and finished fourth. What a fantastic season by the Bond University FC.

The last few rounds of the season was about finishing off strongly to qualify in good ladder positions so we could enter finals full of confidence which we succeeded in doing.

Credit must go to our two Senior Coaches Sam Whish-Wilson (men’s) and Shane Atkins (women’s) also our Men’s Reserve Grade Coach Wyatt Bacon and our Women’s Development Coach Emma Williams and all their assistant coaches.

Also, a big thank you to all our hard-working players who deserved all the success they have had this year.

All year we have set some high standards around effective communication, to allow us to build and maintain relationships and to continually improve as a team and a club on a weekly basis. We want our people to feel that they are in a program with a clear pathway so they can reach their individual and team goals.

A successful year also brings opportunities in the representative arena. We had good numbers selected this year which is a credit to our players and the strength of our program.

In the men’s program, we had three players selected for South Queensland duties, they were our two scholarship players Rhys King and Oliver Smart. The team was captained by our own Ben Merrett who is very highly regarded in Queensland football.

In our women’s program we had 11 players selected to represent Queensland in the under 18‘s national carnival, two were selected in the All Australian team Serene Watson and Kitara Farrar. Serene, Kitara and Charlotte Hammans were also chosen for the National Academy Program which is a fantastic effort.

We had another six players make the Queensland Emerging Talent Team who played and won in Western Australia.

In the AFLW space we had six selected for the Gold Coast Suns Summer Academy Squad and another 11 players selected in the Gold Coast Suns Winter Series squad. We also had two players selected in the Brisbane Lions Winter Series squad.

Over this season we have also had seven players sign contracts with the Gold Coast Suns inaugural AFLW team, who will play their first season in the AFLW competition in 2020, congratulations to Lauren Bella, Charlotte Hammans, Tiarna Ernst, Kitara Farrar, Kalinda Howarth, Taylor Smith and our captain, Molly Ritson. As you can see there is a true pathway for our players to reach the highest level and we know our program provides them with this opportunity.

As coaches and staff our trademark is based around “Leading an environment, supporting development and leadership“. We are extremely proud of our High-Performance Program and what it’s achieved this year.

I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all our partners, AFL Queensland, Brisbane Lions FC and the Gold Coast Suns FC. To our sponsors, SLF Lawyers, ISS Facility Services, Precise Air, AC Fitouts, Bond Physiotherapy and Sports Medicine, Teeth on Ferry, Body Science, Alpha Sport, Head Smart, Jersey Mike’s and Tribal Sport, thank you all for your sponsorship and support.

Finally, to all the Bond University past and present players and our supporters a huge thank you. You make this club a very special place to be involved with.
