Message from the Director of Rugby
Luca Liussi, Director of Rugby

Rugby calendars in Australia should be winding down at this time of the year, however, at Bond University it is just getting busier.

Of the seven Bond University Rugby programs, four of our men’s teams are finishing up and our Pathway to Premier men's and women’s development programs are on ice until November. But our women’s and men’s Sevens' teams will start competition in the coming months and the representative season is kicking off, leading us right back to the 2020 rugby preseason in November this year.

Many of the men’s Senior players have hung up their boots for the season, just missing out on playing finals footy, however, we will enjoy watching a large number of them play in the National Rugby Championships (NRC), with teams being announced early next week. Last year Bond University had record numbers in the NRC squads with Bond University Queensland Country going down in the final to Fiji Drua … our Bond representatives will be excited to attend to some unfinished business over the coming months.

Our Colts 2 team is flying the Bull Sharks Rugby flag during the finals period. The young guns play in their second consecutive Grand Final this weekend at Ballymore, the hallowed turf of Queensland Rugby Union. The youngsters have had an exceptional season and have played some exciting rugby, scoring over 100 tries this season.

The Bond University Women’s Sevens team have been training hard for the National Sevens University Series. Season #3 will begin in September, where the Bond University team will fight it out at four tournaments around the country. Last weekend the ladies travelled to the University of New England in Armidale where they played a weekend of games against the rival University in freezing conditions and a snow fall. The weekend was an important part of the preseason preparations leading into the series and Bond University is looking forward to hosting the ten University teams for Tournament #2 on 28 - 29 September at The Canal.

The Gold Coast Rugby Lunch is another large event on the rugby calendar for Gold Coaster’s and it’s region. Run by Bond University on 13 September, the lunch attracts rugby supporters new and old every year with world class panels. This year we celebrate the Rugby World Cup with key panelists to break down selection and predictions on the William Webb Ellis Trophy winners.

The Bond University Rugby Club will be holding their Presentation Night at the University on 23 August where our exceptional players, staff and volunteers from the 2019 season are acknowledged. In the meantime, we wish the Colts 2 team all the best for this weekend’s Grand Final!

Director of Rugby
