Message from the Executive Director
Garry Nucifora, Executive Director of Sport

Welcome to the first edition of The Bull Shark – Bond University Sport’s monthly update recognizing and celebrating the achievements of our student-athletes and their stories. The Bull Shark will provide information of upcoming events as well as the exciting developments sport contributes to the life and times of the university.

The year is well underway with our men’s and women’s AFL program in full swing where all teams are at or near the top of their respective tables at the half-way mark. Our Rugby program too is at the mid-season mark with three of our four men’s XV teams very much in contention to play semi-finals in August.

The Rugby and AFL precincts are wonderful places to spend beautiful Queensland winter Saturday afternoons and enjoy a refreshment or two with friends.

Our Bull Sharks Netballers commence their regular season on June 23 in the inaugural Sapphire Series where the best players in the state join international players for a 14 week home and away season. Bond will field two teams in the Sapphire and Ruby leagues in 2019. Pre-season form suggests Bond will be a serious force in both leagues. Bond’s first home game will be played at the Carrara Indoor stadium beside Metricon stadium on Saturday July 13 where a big crowd is expected.

Women’s AON Rugby 7s action will be on show again at Bond on September 28 where after a sluggish 2018 season, our girls expect to better their 2017 silver medal finish of the first year.

Bond Swimming will be well represented at the June World Championship Trials in Brisbane where several of our Commonwealth Games and prospective 2020 Olympic Games champions will be on show. On June 20 the university celebrates the grand opening of the Aquatic Centre’s latest addition. The new ten lane 25 metre pool is a FINA accredited, international short course facility capable of recording official short course world records. This magnificent pool will augment Bond’s international reputation as a swimming university. On the same day, the Swimming Hall of Fame will be opened featuring the history of the sport at Bond and recognizing a swimming alumni that makes for impressive reading.

Our Triathletes have competed in several local, national and international meets already this year under the watchful eye of Head Coach, Craig Walton. Triathlon has significant momentum in its first year and an age group squad is being discussed to add to the elite program.

The Oceania U20 Rugby tournament was held for the fifth successive year at the Bond Rugby Club. Australia emerged as Oceania champions defeating New Zealand in the final. As the only annual international rugby played on the Gold Coast, locals flocked to the ground to watch Japan and Fiji join the other two nations in a tough tournament. The final saw the biggest sporting crowd ever assembled at a Bond sporting event (2200).

Bond Tennis won the inaugural SEQ University Tournament in May with the final being played at Pat Rafter Stadium Brisbane. Talks are being held to commence a Pacific Coast (PAC 8) tournament in 2020 based on the success of this state tournament.

The Division 2 University Nationals will be conducted on the Gold Coast in July with Bond expecting to commence its annual charge at the Per Capita Trophy once again in 2019. A strong and enthusiastic team has assembled for the event.

Enjoy reading the rest of our first edition of The Bull Shark.
